Everyone has the occasional unrestful night. But for people
suffering from sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, narcolepsy,
sleep terrors, or chronic insomnia, those unrestful nights can
add up to a serious health issue.
The experts at the Duke Sleep Disorders Center can help.
Duke Sleep Disorders Laboratory
The Sleep Disorders Center is staffed by a multidisciplinary team that includes
neurologists, psychiatrists, pulmonologists, psychologists,
cardiologists, and otolaryngologists.
We see patients
with sleep problems rooted in medical conditions such as
neurodegenerative disease, as well as psychological conditions,
including depression and substance abuse.
Duke’s state-of-the-art Sleep Disorders Center at Durham’s
Millennium Hotel, open since November 2005, is accredited by
the American Academy of Sleep
Medicine, as are all of our physicians.
The center is one of the few accredited centers to be housed
in a hotel.
This novel location allows for a more restful, comfortable
night's sleep without the pressures of being in a hospital
setting, all while having the technology and expertise you
expect from Duke University Hospital.
Our patients rave about the environment and amenities
associated with staying in a hotel.
Sleep Studies
The center specializes in polysomnography,
diagnostic sleep testing also known as a sleep study.
Recognized as the gold standard in identifying significant
sleep problems, sleep studies generally include overnight
monitoring of:
- Airflow
- Blood oxygen level
- Blood pressure
- Brain wave pattern
- Electrocardiographic activity
- Movement of eyes, limbs, and muscles
When examined together, these components provide a
comprehensive look at each patient's unique sleep patterns, as
well as valuable insight into the origin of his or her sleep
problems.
The Sleep Disorders Center also performs sleep latency
testing and vigilance testing, and provides twice-weekly
outpatient clinics to evaluate people suffering from all forms
of sleep disorders.
