Duke medical and radiation oncologists are at the forefront
of efforts to develop and deliver innovative new treatments for
skin cancers.
Working closely with our surgeons, these specialists provide
conventional and experimental treatments before and after
surgery.
Duke medical oncologists offer a full range of biologic
therapies, including immune-based and targeted treatments that
can only be administered by highly experienced doctors and
nurses.
Innovative Therapies
Duke is one of a limited number of centers offering
high-dose Interleukin-2 (IL-2) to melanoma patients.
In addition, we are one of only a few centers combining
experimental drugs with high-dose IL-2 in clinical trials to
try to improve its effectiveness.
To more effectively treat melanomas that invade the brain,
Duke is conducting clinical studies combining the widely used
anti-cancer drug temozolomide with arsenic trioxide, which
encourages cancer cells to self-destruct.
Such therapies are used for patients with regionally
advanced inoperable melanoma or for patients with stage IV
melanoma that has spread to other organs.
Additionally, Duke is one of a limited number of cancer
centers in the Southeast that has the expertise to offer
patients treatment with high-dose interferon alpha, a therapy
used to prevent recurrences in patients with stage II or stage
III melanoma.
Duke also conducts clinical trials testing new ways to use
interferon-based therapies, as well as vaccine therapies, to
prevent recurrences in patients with stage II and stage III
melanoma.
Regional therapies are used for some patients who have
surgically incurable cancers confined to one limb.
All skin cancer and melanoma patients seen at Duke benefit
from regular surveillance appointments with a Duke
dermatologist to check for new lesions.
