A chronic inflammatory condition thought to affect as many
as four million Americans, Sjögren's syndrome occurs when the
immune system targets the body’s own moisture-producing
organs.
Sufferers -- often middle-aged women -- typically experience
extreme dryness in the mouth, eyes, and other mucous
membranes.
Duke rheumatologists are dedicated to helping patients
manage this potentially serious autoimmune disorder. We
coordinate with other appropriate Duke specialists --
ophthalmologists and otolaryngologists, for example -- to
deliver the cross-disciplinary care Sjögren's syndrome patients
require.
