Pulmonary Rehabilitation

When you improve your lung function, you improve your quality of life in countless ways.

Provided through the acclaimed Duke Center for Living, the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program is a dedicated five-week curriculum designed to maximize patients’ lung function through exercise, education, medication, and psychosocial support.

Duke’s Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program is among the country’s most well-respected, and we serve a large number of referral patients with a variety of advanced and chronic lung disorders. We also treat patients undergoing thoracic surgery -- particularly lung transplantation and lung volume reduction surgeries.

To meet the individual needs of our patients, the comprehensive program offers four highly specialized tracks:

  • Medical Intensive Program -- For patients diagnosed with pulmonary disease
  • Perioperative Pulmonary Program -- For patients who have had or who are preparing to undergo lung or lung transplantation surgery
  • Graduate Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program -- For patients who have completed any of the other three programs

Led by faculty from Duke’s Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine, the program is also staffed by a cross-disciplinary team of cardiologists, exercise physiologists, specialized nurses, and respiratory, physical, and occupational therapists.
