Plastic and reconstructive surgery services at Duke are
offered by the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
at Duke University Health System.
Duke has long been a national leader in reconstructive
surgery, and Duke’s plastic surgeons are nationally renowned
for their teaching and innovation.
Patients at Duke have better options because of Duke
surgeons’ expertise in microsurgical techniques. These
procedures involve using an operating microscope to attach tiny
or delicate tissues.
Duke’s expertise in this area is hard to match. Duke plastic
surgeons have long worked to perfect techniques in
microsurgery. Much of the work to develop microsurgical
instruments in the 1960s and 1970s was done at Duke.
Patients with complex defects can benefit from microsurgical
free tissue transfers, which improve appearance and provide
stable wound coverage. Duke is the largest center for
microsurgical free tissue transfers in the Southeastern United
States.
