Targeted Ultrasound

Targeted, or level II, ultrasound is typically performed at 16 to 18 weeks and is helpful in assessing the physical development of the baby.

This evaluation can also be useful for estimating your due date, determining the number of babies, and location of the placenta.

Down syndrome screening can be performed by looking for various “markers” or risk factors for this condition. If one or more markers are present, it does not mean that your baby definitely has Down syndrome, however, the risk for this condition increases.

If no markers are present, the risk may be reduced by as much as 50 percent. It is important to realize that while ultrasound can offer reassurance, it cannot rule out all birth defects or genetic conditions.
