Chorionic Villus Sampling

Chorionic villus sampling (CVS) involves obtaining a sample of the placental tissue and is performed between 10 to 12 weeks of pregnancy.

Depending upon the position of the placenta, a CVS is performed either through the cervix (transcervical) or abdominally (transabdominal). The tissue is sent for chromosome analysis and results are generally available within seven to 10 days.

This test is more than 99 percent accurate in diagnosing chromosomal abnormalities. The risk of miscarriage with CVS is estimated to be 0.5 to 1 percent.
