Patients who come to Duke Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplant (BMT) Program have frequently exhausted all of their other treatment options. They generally have a life expectancy of less than one year without a transplant.
Patients are usually seen within one to two weeks of their referral, despite a lengthy wait list, if it is determined that such speed is necessary.
If transplantation is determined to be the patient’s best option, donors can be identified within a week or two in most cases.
Diseases treated by the Duke Pediatric BMT Program include:
- Acute leukemias (ALL, AML, ANLL, secondary AML)
- Chronic leukemias (CML, JCML, JMML)
- Myelodysplastic syndromes
- Lymphoma (Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's lymphomas)
- Brain tumors
- Neuroblastoma and other solid tumors
- Immunodeficiency syndromes
- Histiocytic syndromes
- Platelet disorders
- Bone marrow failure disorders
- Inborn errors of metabolism
- Hemoglobinopathies like sickle cell anemia and thalassemia
- Refractory autoimmune diseases
