Ray Esclamado was named the Chief of Duke’s Division of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery in January 2006.

Dr. Esclamado comes to Duke University Medical Center from the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University, where he served as Professor of Surgery. He also served as Vice Chairman of the Head and Neck Institute of the Cleveland Clinic and as Head of the Section of Head and Neck Surgery within the Institute since 1996.

Known for his expertise in the care and management of patients with both benign and malignant tumors of the head and neck, Dr. Esclamado will maintain this clinical focus at Duke University. His practice is open to all patients desiring or requiring advanced care for the entire spectrum of head and neck surgical disorders. This includes patients with cancer of the head and neck, including the nose and sinuses, salivary glands, mouth, throat, voicebox, and thyroid gland, and benign tumors of nerves, thyroid and parathyroid glands, paragangliomas, congenital or other rare tumors encountered in the head and neck. Many of these patients will be cared for in a multidisciplinary format, in order to provide the best outcomes for the patient.

Dr. Esclamado has 16 years experience in the education and training of resident physicians in all aspects of head and neck surgery. As Chief, he plan to enhance the Department of Surgery’s clinical programs along with the translational and evidence based outcome studies that are necessary to develop state of the art care for patients. He anticipates that these efforts will result in a resident training experience that will produce the future leaders in Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery.

Dr. Esclamado received his MD degree from the University of California, Davis in 1983, and then completed a residency in Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Washington Affiliated Hospitals in 1989. From 1989 to 1996 he was on the faculty of the Department of OHNS at the University of Michigan, and served as the Director of the Head and Neck Oncology Program.
