Program Description: The Duke Adult Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Transplantation (ABMT) Program is internationally recognized for its novel approaches to treating leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, and other solid tumors through stem cell transplantation. Novel indications such as autoimmune disease and hemoglobinopathies are also treated.

Every year, hundreds of patients receive bone marrow or stem cell transplantation at Duke; nearly half of them come from other states or other nations.

Often there is decreased social and emotional support for these out of town and even local patients. Some are required to stay close to Duke facilities for monitoring many months after transplant.

Volunteers provide opportunities for socialization and encourage these participants to engage in activities that structure free time and help to build their social support network.

Volunteer Location: Ground floor of North Pavilion.

Volunteer Requirements

Application Process: An application must first be submitted. A background check is required.. Volunteer Services’ requirements including JCAHO safety training and necessary health/TB screening must be met.

Commitment: A minimum of six months commitment is required.

Hours: Hours are flexible, but two hours per week minimum is requested. Volunteering may be completed during the following business hours: Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Saturday - Sunday, 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Physical Requirements: Volunteers should have adequate vision, hearing, speech, and mobility to engage with minimal-to-no difficulty.

Dress Code: Please dress in clean, neat, and casual clothing. Sleeveless shirts, above the knee shorts, and open-toed shoes should be avoided. Moderate amounts of time are spent on your feet, so comfortable shoes are recommended. Please avoid wearing any perfumes or heavy cologne.
