Work Ability/Disability

Duke’s occupational medicine, ergonomics, and mental health professionals can effectively address most questions pertaining to the ability of a particular person to perform a job, risks of a particular person doing a job, or job modifications necessary to make a job “fit.”

At certain times, your workplace faces important questions:

  • Should this person enter this job?
  • Does a change in health prevent continuing in a certain job?
  • Would modifying the job (or the treatment) allow the job to "fit" again?
  • What are the risks of this person doing this job?

These questions may arise in:

  • The hiring process
  • A disability claim
  • A work performance problem
  • An FMLA application
  • A work injury
  • Troublesome workplace behavior

Duke’s professionals know the language of all these situations. Whatever the specifics, the key will be what is core to our specialty -- the junction between work and health.

Partnering with our Duke Physical Therapy colleagues, we can also provide a collaborative, work-specific functional capacity assessment, tailored to the questions at hand. When needed, we also incorporate consultations with specialists in other fields, such as neurology, orthopaedics, and cardiology.

Whenever and however your questions arise, please call us. We can assess, monitor, and advise you in a way that meets your needs, through:

  • Telephone conferences
  • Record reviews
  • Interviews, examinations, and testing
  • Group meetings
  • Assessment of job demands and risks
