Duke Center for Human Genetics (MS)
International MS Support Foundation
A central nervous system disorder caused by progressive damage to the outer covering of the nerve cells, multiple sclerosis (MS) prevents nerves in the brain from communicating with the rest of the body.
Duke remains at the forefront of MS research and treatment. The clinicians who staff our Multiple Sclerosis Clinic provide patients with the skilled and compassionate care they need -- from diagnosis to disease management to physical therapy -- while scientists throughout Duke continue to make strides in understanding and treating this debilitating illness.
Collaborators in the Multiple Sclerosis Genetics Group, the most comprehensive genetic study ever of MS, Duke scientists identified a cluster of genes in 2005 believed to be largely responsible for the disorder -- a significant finding that could lead to more effective treatments.
If you would like more information about this multi-center study, contact coordinator Heidi Cope at 800-DUKE-CHG (385-3244) toll-free or 919-684-0655 locally.
