A central nervous system disorder caused by progressive damage to the outer covering of the nerve cells, multiple sclerosis (MS) prevents nerves in the brain from communicating with the rest of the body.

Collaborators in the Multiple Sclerosis Genetics Group, the most comprehensive genetic study ever of MS, Duke scientists identified a cluster of genes in 2005 believed to be largely responsible for the disorder -- a significant finding that could lead to more effective treatments.
