Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) -- also known as Lou Gehrig's disease -- is a neurological disorder characterized by the progressive deterioration of the motor cells that make up the central nervous system.
This deterioration prevents nerve signals from reaching the muscles, resulting in a steady loss of motor control.
The Duke ALS Clinic is recognized by the Muscular Dystrophy Association as a distinguished ALS Research and Clinical Center. The overarching goal of our expert multi-disciplinary team is to maximize the quality of life for every patient, at every stage of ALS.
New patients are interviewed and thoroughly evaluated and tested to confirm an ALS diagnosis. Those who do suffer from ALS work closely with our social workers and occupational, physical, and speech therapists to identify and manage current and upcoming functional problems. Patients are also kept abreast of Duke ALS research studies for which they may qualify.
