Diagnostic Tests

The types of treatment offered to each patient vary depending on the type and extent (or “stage”) of their cancer.

Our team approach and state-of the-art imaging techniques enable us to stage each patient’s cancer as precisely as possible, which is critical to selecting the most appropriate therapies.

These techniques may include CT scans, MRI scans, and positron emission tomography (PET) scans. Patients may also undergo a genetic test to help physicians determine the best course for drug therapy.

Duke has led numerous studies to evaluate the effectiveness of new diagnostic techniques. It is also a world leader in PET scanning for lung cancer -- a highly sensitive technique which allows physicians to better determine whether cancer has spread throughout the body and to more easily distinguish benign from malignant tumors.
