Medical Imaging

If the results of your physical exam or your blood screening warrant it, your doctor may need to see what’s going on inside your body.

He or she may request that you undergo an imaging procedure that can produce a picture of your internal organs, tissues, nerves, or vasculature.

Such imaging procedures include:

  • Ultrasound
  • X-ray
  • Magnetic-resonance image (MRI)
  • Computed tomography (CT) scan
  • Positron emission tomography (PET) scan

Sometimes ultrasounds will be performed by your internist. You may be referred to a radiologist if your internist determines that you need an x-ray, MRI, CT, or PET scan.

In many of these cases, you will need to make a separate appointment to have such a test done. These tests are usually not performed without a referral from a physician; your internist and nursing staff will help you to set up such appointments.
