If your physician is concerned that you have an infection or an abnormal growth of cells in your body, he or she may take a sample of some kind to have analyzed by a pathologist or to be sent to the infectious disease lab for a culture to be performed.

A pathologist is a medical doctor who has undergone special training to become an expert in identifying and understanding changes in the structure or function of the body’s cells, tissues, and organs.

Internists often consult with pathologists to rule out or diagnose diseases such as infections and cancers. The most common types of pathology tests are biopsies and microbial cultures.

In many cases, a sample of your blood, urine, other bodily fluids, or a tissue sample will be taken by your doctor. The sample will be sent to the pathologist, who will analyze the fluid or tissue and provide your doctor with a report based on his or her findings and interpretation.
