As physicians and teachers within the Duke University Health System, we have a strong
emphasis on educating medical students and resident
physicians.
A resident physician spends at least three years of post
medical school training at Duke under the close supervision of
an attending physician. All patients seen by a resident are
discussed at length with an attending physician who supervises
all management and treatment decisions. This allows us to
assure excellent care while providing an invaluable education
for these young physicians.
Medical students also spend time in our practice and will
always be supervised by the attending physician. Medical
students cannot serve as primary care providers to
patients.
Our physician faculty act as teachers and mentors to many
learners within the Duke system. This includes students in the
School of Nursing and those participating in the Duke Physician
Assistant and Nurse Practitioner training programs.
Duke General Internal Medicine also participates as a
practice site for the Duke Hospital Ambulatory Care Pharmacy
Residency program, as well as for pharmacy students from the
University of North Carolina School of Pharmacy.
