Duke Center for Endometriosis Research & Treatment offers unique, expert care to diagnose and treat endometriosis. Our focus is on the complete surgical excision of any tissue causing pain.
Diagnosis
The gold standard for the diagnosis of endometriosis is by visualization; the likelihood of accurately diagnosing endometriosis increases even more when the specimen can be sent to pathology.
Our doctors offer laparoscopic surgery to view the endometriosis. This surgery is a minimally invasive procedure where a doctor will insert a tiny camera into your belly button to view the internal organs and the pelvis and search for endometriosis.
At the Duke Center for Endometriosis Research & Treatment, "see and treat" laparoscopy is performed, so that all the endometriosis is found and treated at the same procedure as often as possible.
Treatment
At the Duke Center for Endometriosis Research & Treatment, we offer expert care of patients with endometriosis and specialize in the laparoscopic surgical management of endometriosis by excision.
Surgical excision involves cutting out the entire endometriosis implant and sending it to pathology. The goal of surgery is always the complete excision of endometriosis wherever it is found.
To accomplish this, we have the latest, state-of-the-art equipment available in our operating rooms, such as advanced, high-definition imaging equipment and a very refined carbon dioxide (CO2) laser.
Patients have come from all over the U.S. to receive this laparoscopic excision for the treatment of endometriosis.
Research
At the Duke Center for Endometriosis Research & Treatment, there are a number of ongoing studies related to the excision of endometriosis. Current studies focus on finding ways to diagnose endometriosis earlier and examining the outcomes of surgical excision.
A multi-center comparative study of excision versus ablation of endometriosis is currently being planned. Ablation of endometriosis involves burning the lesions that are seen, while the goal of excision is to remove the lesion entirely.
The research done by our doctors benefits patients by offering patients access to the most cutting edge technology and treatments.
