The cornerstone of our clinical care program is the
acclaimed Duke Geriatric Evaluation and Treatment (GET) Clinic,
an entity associated with Duke University Center for the Study
of Aging and Human Development that has helped thousands of
“frail elders” -- older people with multiple health problems --
enjoy more robust health and a better quality of life.
The clinic’s dedicated and compassionate team of physicians,
social workers, nurses, and other caregivers carefully
evaluates each patient, and then works with families to design
a care program and living plan that meets the specific needs of
that patient.
We encourage our patients to continue their relationships
with their primary care physicians, and we work closely with
those providers to seamlessly diagnose, treat, and deliver
follow-up care for a full range of health and wellness concerns
that are prevalent among the elderly.
At the GET Clinic, Duke geriatricians provide diagnostic,
consultative, and treatment services to outpatients for medical
conditions that include:
- Arthritis
- Dementia
- Depression
- Diabetes
- Falls
- High blood pressure
- Incontinence
- Medication issues
- Neurological decline
- Osteoporosis
- Shingles
In addition, GET Clinic faculty and staff also provide
services that include:
- Psychiatric evaluation, treatment, and referrals for
intellectual, emotional, and behavioral issues
- Social evaluation, support,
and referrals for patients, family members, and caregivers
coping with aging-related issues
- Consultation, planning, and referrals relating to
long-term care
The goal of the clinic’s integrated, whole-person approach
to geriatric care is to keep elders healthy and independent for
as long as possible.
Our clinicians also provide geriatric care at the three Duke
University Health System hospitals and two Durham, NC, continuing care
retirement communities.
