Cardiac Catheterization

Cardiac catheterization involves the injection of contrast dye in order to take detailed images of the heart and cardiac arteries. Duke has been a leader in catheter-based intervention for valvular heart disease for more than 20 years.

Duke Heart Center offers one of the country’s largest and most experienced diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterization programs -- and patients and families consistently rank Duke's cardiac catheterization program among the top performers in a national patient-satisfaction survey.

Using a variety of imaging techniques, Duke cath labs perform more than 15,000 diagnostic and interventional cardiac and peripheral procedures every year.

Duke Heart Center serves as a regional referral center, offering patients and referring physicians immediate, 24/7 access to experienced interventional cardiologists.

A national leader in percutaneous interventions (such as balloon angioplasty and stenting) for acute myocardial infarction, Duke’s interventional cardiology program also offers percutaneous mitral-valve repair.

The program also houses the Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy Clinic, one of only a few dedicated programs of its kind in the Southeast. Our clinicians evaluate and treat hundreds of patients each year with therapies that include medication, surgery, and catheter-based alcohol septal ablation.

Mobile Catheterization Program

Duke also provides diagnostic cardiac catheterizations at community hospitals through a mobile catheterization program called HeartCare.

We currently offer mobile cardiac catheterization services in two North Carolina communities in affiliation with:

  • Community Memorial Healthcenter, South Hill, VA
  • Maria Parham Medical Center, Henderson, NC

For more information, patients may ask their local primary care physician or cardiologist or call 888-ASK-DUKE (888-275-3853).
