Duke offers particular expertise in endoscopic ultrasound, with a large volume of procedures performed each year.
Endoscopic ultrasound allows your physician to obtain images and information about the digestive tract and the surrounding tissue and organs. The upper tract includes the esophagus, stomach and duodenum; the lower tract includes the colon and rectum.
The procedures can be used to diagnose the cause of a condition or confirm a diagnosis. The procedure can also be used to evaluate cancers of the digestive system, enabling the physician to determine the stage of the cancer and whether it has spread to other areas.
During the Procedure
The physician will insert a thin, flexible tube that has an ultrasound probe (transducer) at the tip through the patient's mouth or rectum, depending on the area being examined.
By inserting the endoscope into the upper or lower digestive tract, the physician can obtain high quality ultrasound images, providing the physician with more information and a more detailed picture.
