Uterus Evaluation: Trial Transfer

Prior to transferring an embryo into the endometrial cavity your physician may recommend a trial transfer to test the viability of the operation.

A trial transfer, also referred to as a mock transfer, involves passing an empty embryo transfer catheter through the cervix into the endometrial cavity. The procedure is preformed to ensure the cervical canal can be easily navigated with a catheter prior to the day of the embryo transfer.

By evaluating the path in advance, your physician can better anticipate any problems or complications that may interfere with an actual embryo transfer and suggest another treatment course if necessary. This minimizes the chances of spending the time and energy to create embryos that can’t be delivered to the endometrial cavity.

The risks associated with this procedure are negligible and include a very small chance of infection and possibly, some short-term uterine cramping.
