Two forms of surgery are used to evaluate the uterus effectively: hysteroscopy and laparoscopy.
Both are minimally invasive procedures that require little hospital time. Brief synopses are provided below; please follow the links for more detailed procedure descriptions.
Hysteroscopy is a surgical procedure involving a small scope placed through the cervix into the uterine cavity. This allows for diagnostic as well as operative procedures to be performed.
Hysteroscopy can evaluate the lining of the uterine cavity, endometrial polyps, submucosal fibroids, and congenital defects of the uterus and cervix.
Laparoscopy is a surgical procedure involving lighted scopes that are used to evaluate the pelvic organs for diagnostic or operative purposes.
The procedure can reveal information about fibroids, pelvic scar tissue (adhesions), the condition of the fallopian tubes, endometriosis, appearance of the ovaries, and many other findings.
