Treatments

The Esophageal Cancer Clinic offers patients the full array of the latest, scientifically proven diagnostic and treatment options.

Thoracic Surgery

Our highly experienced thoracic surgeons perform more than 100 esophageal resections each year. This is an important statistic given that outcomes from this procedure are directly associated with the experience of the surgeon and the medical center -- and that 20 such procedures a year is considered high volume.

Our surgeons work closely with medical and radiation oncologists before and after surgery to coordinate ongoing treatment.

Medical and Radiation Oncology

As a leading academic medical center, Duke benefits from the expertise of medical oncologists and radiation oncologists who focus specifically on gastrointestinal cancers, providing a unique perspective not found in most community hospitals.

Our medical oncologists have the experience to use both conventional treatments and, where appropriate, cutting-edge chemotherapy agents available through Duke’s robust clinical trials program.

Our radiation oncologists also provide an array of innovative treatment options to help battle both the initial cancer and stave off its spread to other parts of the body. Duke was the first medical center in North Carolina to use photodynamic therapy, or PDT, in the treatment of Barrett’s esophagus.

Rehabilitation

Because esophageal cancer and its treatment can significantly affect quality of life, the Duke Esophageal Cancer Clinic offers rehabilitation services such as consultations with a nutritionist and pain management services to manage side effects and to help each patient return to normal activities as soon as possible.

Duke also offers educational and psychological support to cancer patients and their families through its Patient Assistance Programs.
