Duke’s specialized and experienced multidisciplinary team treats epilepsy patients of all ages as both inpatients and outpatients, and our state-of-the-art facilities are equipped specifically for the care of epilepsy patients.
Our cross-disciplinary staff includes adult and pediatric
epileptologists (neurologists with specialized training in epilepsy),
general neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists, and specially
trained nurses and technologists.
Duke’s surgical approach to epilepsy -- now available to many patients -- has relieved seizures for countless people, with few complications, and we offer a wide variety of surgical and non-surgical treatment options.
A leader in the medical and surgical treatment of epilepsy since the
1960s, Duke Medicine’s epilepsy program holds the highest level of
accreditation by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers.
Many of our physicians lead national and international epilepsy
organizations, and our epileptologists average more than 20 years of
experience serving both pediatric and adult patients.
Research
To remain on the leading edge of epilepsy treatment, Duke participates
in a number of clinical trials of anti-epileptic drugs, and our ongoing
basic and clinical research examines topics such as:
- Febrile seizures and their relationship to mesial temporal sclerosis
- Basic mechanisms of epilepsy
- Pharmacogenetics of anti-epileptic drug therapy
