Hand

From standard procedures to innovative treatments pioneered at Duke, our physicians' knowledge and experience is hard to match.

Duke offers state-of-the-art treatment for conditions of the hand, including endoscopic surgery and reconstructive surgery.

Conditions treated include:

  • Claw hand
  • Colles wrist fracture
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Volkmann’s Ischemic Contracture

Volkmann’s Ischemic Contracture can be treated with early surgery to release pressure in the forearm before muscle or nerve injury sets in. Later, reconstructive surgery to lengthen muscles can help restore hand function.

Carpal tunnel surgery, including endoscopic carpal tunnel surgery, is offered.

Wrist Fracture

Broken wrists are the most common fracture in people under age 75.

If wrist pain from a fall gets worse with time, an x-ray can reveal whether the wrist bone is broken or cracked. In addition, an MRI can reveal ligament tears that an x-ray can’t.

Some broken bones may require only a cast. However, bone fractures and ligament tears are candidates for surgery, especially in younger patients and those for whom avoiding loss of function is a priority.

At Duke, many patients can receive minimally invasive surgery, which eliminates the need for large incisions.
