Duke’s congenital heart disease program includes a Duke
surgical team dedicated to helping adults with congenital heart
disease.
Surgical approaches include the use of mini-thoracotomy and
minimally invasive procedures.
The mini-thoracotomy approach may be used to close holes in
the heart (atrial septal defects) or to repair or replace
certain heart valves (mitral, tricuspid, or aortic). In a mini-thoracotomy, the surgeon makes a small incision under a patient's rib in order to perform the surgery; this tiny incision decreases healing time and makes it easier for the patient to recover.
