Duke Children’s provides skilled and compassionate primary care for all your baby’s routine health care needs -- from newborns to 12 months.
Well-baby visits evaluate your infant’s general medical and developmental health, as well as the overall health of the family, and address age-appropriate issues like immunizations.
Your newborn should be seen the first week after birth -- or during for the first week at home, if he or she spent time in the hospital after delivery. Well-baby visits should then be scheduled at one, two, four, six, nine, and 12 months.
If your baby is sick, and you’re not sure whether he or she should be seen by a doctor, call the Nurse Advice Line at 919-620-5333. (In an emergency, dial 911.)
Nurses are available on weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and same-day appointments are usually available to those who call early in the day.
After-hours and urgent care details
Childhood immunizations are a critical part of lifelong wellness.
All Duke Children’s primary care sites provide a full complement of immunizations for infants, children, and adolescents. Parents are provided with copies of the immunization record.
If you have questions about the immunizations necessary for your child, refer to the Centers for Disease Control's immunization schedule.
After delivery, some families have difficulties with breastfeeding. When the baby's primary care doctor sees that there are feeding problems, a referral to a lactation consultant should be made.
Nancy Murray, RN, BSN, IBCLC, our board-certified lactation consultant, provides years of experience working with breastfeeding mothers and babies.
In the office, she obtains a thorough history and assessment and spends the time necessary to ensure that babies breastfeed well. Educating parents about their special situation in a calm, relaxed setting, she also helps with any special treatments or necessary equipment.
After a breastfeeding family comes in for a lactation consultation, a report is sent back to the referring doctor to ensure collaboration and consistency of care.
