The Duke Center for Blood Conservation uses a variety of
sophisticated techniques and technologies to eliminate the need
for blood transfusion.
Our treatment options include the following.
- Argon beam: Coagulates the patient’s blood at the
bleeding site during surgery.
- Cell saver: Cleans and recirculates the patient’s
own blood continually during surgical procedures.
- Electro-cautery: Uses heat to stop vessels from
bleeding.
- Harmonic scalpel: Uses mechanical energy to
coagulate and incise tissue.
- Hemodilution: Dilutes blood within a circuit that
is constantly linked to the patient’s circulatory
system.
- Synthetic erythropoietin: Stimulates bone marrow
to produce enough red blood cells to eliminate the need for
transfusion.
