Treatments

The Duke Center for Blood Conservation uses a variety of sophisticated techniques and technologies to eliminate the need for blood transfusion.

Our treatment options include the following.

  • Argon beam: Coagulates the patient’s blood at the bleeding site during surgery.
  • Cell saver: Cleans and recirculates the patient’s own blood continually during surgical procedures.
  • Electro-cautery: Uses heat to stop vessels from bleeding.
  • Harmonic scalpel: Uses mechanical energy to coagulate and incise tissue.
  • Hemodilution: Dilutes blood within a circuit that is constantly linked to the patient’s circulatory system.
  • Synthetic erythropoietin: Stimulates bone marrow to produce enough red blood cells to eliminate the need for transfusion.
