In response to growing concerns about keeping health information private, Congress passed the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). The legislation includes a privacy rule that creates national standards to protect individuals' personal health information. Most health-care providers in the country are required to implement these standards by April 14, 2003.

When it comes to patient information, "Mum's the Word." Duke's Patient Bill of Rights assures each patient that his/her treatment is confidential and it will not be revealed to anyone without proper authorization. Since all DUMC employees are involved directly or indirectly in patient care, confidentiality is an important issue for everyone. Breaches of confidentiality carry serious consequences.
