Judd
W. Moul, MD, director of the Duke Prostate Center, trades
in multiple opinions and individualized care for prostate
cancer.
Why is it important for a man to know his options when it
comes to prostate cancer?
Moul: Every man is different, so his cancer
is different and his treatment choices will be, too. The best
treatment for you won’t necessarily be the best treatment for
your brother or your neighbor.
What are some of the choices?
Moul: At Duke we offer a comprehensive
array of treatments including minimally invasive nerve-sparing
prostatectomy, robotic prostatectomy, focal cryosurgery,
brachytherapy, and more -- plus, access to clinical trials
testing the very latest cutting-edge therapies. Each one offers
unique benefits in terms of treating the cancer and maintaining
the patient’s sexual and urinary functions.
Judd Moul, MDHow does a patient choose?
Moul: Duke offers multidisciplinary clinics
and second-opinion clinics that ensure you’ve explored all your
options. With that comes great peace of mind. And it’s simply a
better way to care for men with prostate cancer.
What else will give patients peace of mind?
Moul: My colleagues at the Duke Prostate
Center are nationally and internationally recognized medical
professionals and scientists. We see over 1,000 newly diagnosed
prostate cancer patients each year. There is incredible work
and research going on at Duke Medicine in prostate cancer -- in
genomics, in surgery, in drugs, in imaging. True
innovation.
Why did you go into medicine?
Moul: I had an early interest in medicine,
but when my father died suddenly as I was completing high
school, it solidified my desire and determination to become a
physician. As a prostate cancer specialist and surgeon, my goal
is to cure the cancer while ensuring that the treatment does
not hinder my patients’ quality of life.
